Background

The exact knowledge of blood volume and haemoglobin mass is important in the field of sports and in clinical medicine.

  • An adequate high blood volume as it is e.g. present in endurance athletes has positive effects on endurance performance and is a prerequisite for elite performance
  • A too low blood volume or haemoglobin mass as e.g. present after acute blood loss or in anemia can lead to an insufficient oxygenation of the tissue and, therefore, is a risk of health
  • A too high blood volume as e.g. present in subjects suffering from cardiac failure can damage relevant organs (heart, vessels, kidney) and is a potential health risk.
