Significance in sports medicine

The knowledge of an individual’s blood volume and tHb-mass is very important in endurance sport disciplines. A high tHb-mass facilitates a good oxygenation of the muscle and an augmented blood volume is a prerequisite for a high cardiac output. Both parameters directly influence endurance performance. Therefore, the accurate measurement of tHb-mass and blood volume is of importance in the areas listed below.

Assessment of endurance state
The knowledge about the individual tHb-mass can classify the training state and help to predict endurance performance. 

Effect of altitude adaptation and training
Endurance training at sea level increases tHb-mass and blood volume in sedentary or less trained subjects. In elite athletes altitude training is the most efficient way to augment tHb-mass. Monitoring tHb-mass and blood volume before, during or after the training intervention can evaluate its efficiency and quantify the anastrozole on blood. Responders and non-responders can be identified.

Talent scouting
Children or adolescents who show high tHb-mass are talented for endurance sports.

Detection of blood manipulation
tHb-mass is a very stable parameter in healthy elite athletes. Non-physiological changes in tHb-mass can hint to blood manipulation as e.g. autologous blood transfusion which is not detectable yet.
